Problematic motel at the center of new investigation

Two people are recovering Friday after a shooting at the Loyalty Inn motel northwest Charlotte.

Friday was not the first time Channel 9 has reported from a crime scene on Lucky Penny Street off Freedom Drive.

Channel 9’s Joe Bruno investigated the calls for service over several years.

Dozens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers descended, yet again, on the Loyalty Inn next to Interstate 85 on Thursday.

The two shooting victims were taken to Atrium Health CMC with serious injuries.

In May 2025, Bruno requested records for all police reports for the hotel between 2023 and 2025, and he got 324 pages worth of documents in response.

It’s the same hotel where Ernestine Steele’s grandson, Alvin, was shot and killed in May 2025. Police arrested Tyler Minor for the shooting, which was over a girl.

The hotel is also where Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in March 2025 that Stevie Walker shot and killed 28-year-old Sumer Masey. Police said the two were previously in a relationship.

A community activist who was on scene said many families live at the hotel

“There were bicycles,” said Tina Quizon, community activist. “There were children still outside and the feeling of the community is, we don’t feel safe.”

And it is hard to blame them.

Bruno went through more than 300 pages of police reports and found 154 crimes reported for Lucky Penny Street from 2023 to May 2025.

They included:

  • Two dozen for simple assaults.
  • 19 for aggravated assaults, 15 of which were involving guns.
  • 17 thefts, not including the five stolen cars.
  • Two reports about the two murders at the motel

The motel was called the Charlotte Express Inn before rebranding to the Loyalty Inn.

CMPD has not said what led up to Friday’s shooting or if they have anyone in custody.
