LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — A 7-year-old girl in Lancaster County suffered severe burns to her foot on Wednesday when she dropped a plate of hot mashed potatoes in the school cafeteria.
The girl, Maddie Jay, was wearing flip-flops when she dropped the potatoes at Buford Elementary School, her mother, Jessica Stevens said.

Teachers brushed the mashed potatoes off her foot.
Stevens posted a photo of her daughter’s burns to raise awareness and prevent it from happening to another child.
Channel 9 reporter Greg Suskin talked to Lancaster County Food Service director Angela McCrorey, who said it was a freak accident.
McCrorey said the food is kept at 135 degrees in a bin over hot water. McCrorey said she apologized to the family and called it an unfortunate accident.
The district has never had any complaints about other children being burned.
