Two killed in Rowan County crash, arrest made

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Two people were killed in a Rowan County crash Friday night.

The incident took place at 11:13 p.m. along Amity Hill Road near Cleveland. NCSHP says Juan Aguilar was driving impaired when he crossed into oncoming traffic and hit another car.

Catawba College student-athlete Fletcher Harris and 19-year-old Skylar Provenza were both killed in the crash.

The school’s athletic department says Harris was a native of Catawba and a member of the soccer team for the last three seasons.

They also said Harris was consistently recognized on the Presidential Honor Roll and Dean’s List.

“Our hearts are broken,” Catawba Head Men’s Soccer Coach Alex Morais said in a statement on the athletic department’s website. “Fletcher was profoundly loved and will be missed by everyone in our program and community.”

The statement also said information regarding vigil and funeral services will be shared when available.

Aguilar is charged with felony death by vehicle and DWI. He is also facing a charge of failure to appear in Cabarrus County Court on a DWI charge from 2020.
