CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is scheduled to open its fourth parallel runway in less than a year.
The $1 billion-project on the new 10,000-foot-long by 150-foot-wide “Smart Runway” broke ground in 2023.
Today, more than half of it is paved, and nearly 2,000 sensors are being installed beneath the concrete to provide a virtual replica of the runway. The sensors allow engineers to collect data and track aircraft movements as they taxi, takeoff and land. This will help airport officials make real-time maintenance, operational and safety decisions.
