CHARLOTTE — Thousands of seniors at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are braving the heat for graduation at Truliant Amphitheater Friday. With heat advisories in effect across the area, officials are taking extra precautions to keep graduates and families safe during the ceremonies.

CMS says fans will be placed on the stage, both sides of the covered seating and under tents for students.
While families are not permitted to bring their own water, complimentary water and refilling stations will be available at the venue.
Nicole Lilly was at the amphitheater on Friday watching her nephew graduate from Hough High School.
“He played on the football team and they went to the championship, and they got their first ring,” Lilly said.
While that was her main priority, she says she definitely noticed the heat, especially with the temperatures reaching close to 100 degrees.
“Oh God, it’s horrible, like it’s treacherous out here,” Lilly told Channel 9’s Eli Brand.
In the crowds, we could see people with water and fans to try and stay cool. Once inside, CMS also stepped up to do what they could to keep the crowd safe under the overhead cover.
“Bring your umbrella, bring some water, and be hydrated,” Lilly said.
Medical teams will also be on site to help those in need.
For people who need assistance walking to their seats, golf carts will be available to transport attendees.
CMS reminds families that the amphitheater offers 7,000 seats under the pavilion for overhead cover.
To stay cool and safe, CMS encourages attendees to:
- Drink plenty of water, and avoid caffeine and sugary drinks.
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing. Graduates are encouraged to wear light layers under their gowns, while guests are advised to bring hats or umbrellas for sun protection.
- Apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses.
Personal fans, misting fans and cooling towels will be allowed.
Additional Heat Resources
Even if you aren’t celebrating a graduate this weekend, there are lots of resources available for those who need to cool off.
People who are living unsheltered and need a break from the heat can go to Roof Above’s Day Service Center. It is open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
CATS will offer free rides to the Day Service Center, as well as recreation centers, senior centers and spray grounds.
Libraries are also generally open to the public from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
