‘Concerning’: Community members worry after double shooting leaves one dead, one hurt

CHARLOTTE — Two recent violent incidents has people who come to a north Charlotte area thinking about their safety, especially since no one has been arrested in the most recent case.

Blue lights, officers and crime scene tape. These are scenes that are happening too frequently on North Tryon Street.

“It’s very concerning because at the end of the day, when you go outside, you expect to have fun, you expect to be safe,” said a shopper who spoke with Channel 9.

On Friday around 8 p.m., police were called out to West 30th Street and found that two men had been shot. 20-year-old Cameron Gilliard-Robinson died at the hospital.

Three weeks prior to that and a couple of blocks from where Friday’s shooting took place, there was a police standoff after a man allegedly fired shots at random passing cars and pointed a gun at an officer. Police eventually arrested that man.

The Irie Nation Jamaican restaurant has been in the area since 2019 and has survived some tough challenges, including the pandemic.

Kayla Reynolds is the manager.

When asked if she thinks these violent incidents might affect her business, she said, “not at all.”

“It’s not a violent area, we’ve never really had issues,” Reynolds said. “I know that the incident happened yesterday and one happened a couple of weeks prior, but it’s not something that constantly happens.”

Her concern is with the family of the victim. Ikea Woodynoley is also hoping they get the peace the deserve.

“I just pray for the family,” Woodynoley said. “I hope the family does get justice and they find whoever, you know, harmed these gentlemen.”

There is no word on the condition of the other victim who was shot.

People have not made an arrested in the murder, but they’re asking for the public’s help.
