LINVILLE GORGE, N.C. — Heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Isaias prompted two rescues in the Linville Gorge area.

According to the Linville-Central Rescue Squad, two hikers and a dog were cut off by floodwaters in the Harpers Creek area. Thankfully, rescuers were able to locate them and lead them out another way.

A second rescue effort involved a hiker who slipped into the water. Rescuers say that person was able to get out on their own.

While the storm brought beneficial rain to Charlotte, western North Carolina saw much higher rain totals.

Channel 9 Meteorologist Danielle Miller said the Charlotte area saw around 2 to 3 inches of rain. Radar estimates indicate areas in Burke, Caldwell and Rutherford counties saw anywhere from 5.5 to 6.5 inches of rainfall.

While the system prompted flooding concerns across the region, much of the rain fell upstream, replenishing lakes and rivers in the Piedmont. This should have a positive effect on drought conditions.
