YORK COUNTY, S.C. — An apparent false call in York County drew a response from deputies Wednesday morning.

The York County Sheriff’s Office said they got a call from York’s dispatch center around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Trent Faris, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said a man called in to tell dispatchers he shot his wife and three kids. The man also said he had some partners with rifles in the woods and on a roof in the area as well.

Investigators were on Kingsburry Road off Highway 49. A massive law enforcement presence could be seen from Chopper 9 Skyzoom.

Faris said law enforcement talked to the people in the actual house on Kingsburry Road.

“There were people in the house that we responded to,” he said. “Nobody was hurt physically, but I’m sure they’re going to have a good story to tell after today.”

The sheriff’s office said at this point in the investigation, the incident appears to be a false call. They want to continue investigating before they determine it’s a prank.

“A lot of time, resources, and effort was brought to this,” Faris said.

Dozens of neighbors on Kingsburry Road couldn’t get to their homes Wednesday morning, and others were forced to stay inside while they wondered what was going on.

“It’s kind of scary, it is,” said Dee Glenn. “There’s kids out here and everything.”

Glenn said she was outside her house when officers started to arrive.

“They came to the back door and they just said, ‘lock the door, stay in the house,’” she said.

Glenn said she knows the neighbors who were in the house investigators were called to. She said she’s grateful everyone was OK.

The York County Sheriff’s Office had made no arrests in this case, but if it turns out to have been a prank call, the caller could face criminal charges.

The director of the county’s 911 center told Channel 9′s Tina Terry there is technology that shows who is behind 911 calls.

Faris also this isn’t the first time the agency has encountered something like this. Back in September 2019, they received a similar call. A man claimed to have killed his girlfriend and said he was going to burn down his house.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
