CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — Jorge Ospina, a charter bus driver, was charged with DWI after a weekend crash in Cabarrus County involving Myers Park High School students, troopers said.
The students, who were with a chorus group from the school, were traveling home from New York City.
The accident was reported around 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Concord when the bus hit a box truck on I-85 near Concord Mills.
Investigators said traffic slowed on the interstate due to a motorcyclist. The bus had minor damage.
Ospina was transported to a local hospital for testing, troopers said.
“It’s shocking,” said Jimmy Winfield, whose child attends Myers Park High School. “You put your trust in people.”
Nobody was injured, but troopers said Ospina was under the influence of a substance.
“It shocks me a lot because it's a bus full of students, high school students,” said Cesia Lopez, a former student.
Sunway Charters, whose main office is in Winston-Salem, has a satisfactory rating with one injury crash in the last two years, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records.
Ospina had a valid CDL, troopers said.
Ospina is due in court in June.
