Former Coastal Carolina University football player charged with fatally hitting man

CONWAY, S.C. — A former Coastal Carolina University football player was charged with hitting and killing a man in South Carolina Saturday morning, officials said, WPDE reported.

Timothy Shulkcum, 55, was fatally hit around 1 a.m. in Conway on Highway 544.

Authorities said the victim was helping another car on the median of Highway 544 when Patton drove his truck off into the median hitting the other car. The car then hit Shulkcum, who was standing outside of it.

The driver, 23-year-old Riley Patton has been charged with felony driving under the influence involving death and leaving the scene of a collision involving death.

Assistant Athletic Director at CCU Kevin Davis said Patton’s eligibility to play football at CCU ended in November. He is still enrolled in classes at the University.

Officials said Patton continued to drive his truck to a nearby grocery store where he was arrested.

“I just can’t believe that happened and we didn’t hear anything over here," said neighbor Sandra Lamontagne.

Patton’s bail is set at a total of $200,000 for the two charges.
