ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — The former Wadesboro fire chief was in critical condition Saturday night after a tree fell on his shop when thunderstorms rolled through Anson County Friday afternoon.
Retired chief Eddie Pope, who still serves as a volunteer firefighter, was in his shop on Morven Road when the tree came crashing down and crushed it.
First responders rushed Pope to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he remains in critical condition.

Fire Chief Marc Sessions told Channel 9 that the shop was totaled.
