SHELBY, N.C. — Former Shelby Police Officer Karson Hyder, 22, has been charged with one count of assault inflicting serious injury.

The charge follows the surfacing of a video showing Hyder punching a woman during an arrest that occurred on a Friday morning.
The officer was fired over the weekend.
Hyder surrendered to the Cleveland County Detention Center at 10 a.m. Monday and was released on a $10,000 secured bond.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation initiated an inquiry into the incident, which examined an allegation of excessive use of force. The investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation was requested by both the Shelby Police Chief and the Cleveland County District Attorney.
A local pastor told Channel 9’s Ken Lemon that the punishment should be steeper.
“It’s an injustice,” said the Rev. Melvin Clark, who heads the local branch of the Ebenezer Baptist Church Association.
Clark plans to go to the city council meeting on Monday night with questions about police training.
“There are so many things I saw that reflect an officer’s lack to know how to respond,” Clark said.
He has some concerns about the misdemeanor charge against the officer.
“What I cannot understand, for the life of me, is why there was no intent to inflict bodily harm,” Clark said.
The woman in the video, Cherrie Moore, was charged with breaking and entering , resisting a public officer, and assault on a public official. Those charges were dropped. Hyder arrested Moore before in August 2025 for breaking and entering and resisting, according to court records.
Attorney Ben Crump has been at the heart of police interactions with the Black community that have made headlines.
He is working with the woman’s family and will speak publicly in Shelby on Tuesday about the situation.
Police have not said what led up to Friday’s assault.
