GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — The Gaston County Sheriff said he's standing firm on 287 (g) even after others across the state have decided to drop it.
Sheriff Alan Cloninger said he will continue to implement the controversial policy, which lets deputies share information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials when undocumented immigrants are booked into jail.

Last month, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden ended 287(g).
Gaston and Cabarrus counties are among the four counties in the state using 287(g).

He promised to abolish the program during his campaign and ended it within his first week on the job.
Wake County abolished the program shortly after Mecklenburg County.
