ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — A woman was asleep on her couch Monday morning and didn’t realize that her home in Alexander County was on fire until a good Samaritan rescued her.
The fire started on the front porch of Patsy Teague’s home in the Bethlehem community, according to firefighters.
The man made sure Teague and her dogs were out of the home before he grabbed a hose and tried to fight the fire himself.
A good Samaritan spotted the flames and rushed to get Teague out of the home. She told Channel 9 that she doesn’t believe she would have gotten out alive if the man hadn’t alerted her.
"He was just beating on the door, waking me up, telling me to get out," Teague said.
"He's a hero," said Gwyn Wallace, a friend of Teague's. "If someone had not been there at the time they were, she may not be with us today."
Three fire departments were called in to help bring the fire under control.
Before anyone could get his name or tell him thank you, the good Samaritan left.
"I'd really like to shake his hand and give him a hug," Teague said.
Wallace said she believes a higher power may have been at work.
"I just thank the Lord you were in the area at the time," Wallace said of the good Samaritan.
Firefighters are investigating to determine what started the fire.
