CHARLOTTE — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are investigating a homicide in the Moores Chapel area of Mecklenburg County Wednesday morning.

It happened just after 9 a.m. inside a home along Florentine Way.

Police said they were called for a break-in and discovered a man with gunshot wounds when they arrived. MEDIC said he died at the scene.

Detectives are still working to figure out what led up to the violence.

As they continue their search for answers, neighbors say they never expected something like this to hit so close to home.

Channel 9’s Miana Massey spoke with Stephen Machanic, who just moved into the neighborhood a few months ago. He said alerts from his Ring camera sent him rushing home.

“I didn’t think it would happen on my street,” he said. “First of all, it’s really sad. I feel bad for the victim, but I didn’t think it would happen on my street.”

Police said it’s too early to say whether they have a suspect, but they say there’s no threat to the public.

“Whenever we have incidents like this happen it’s sad and unfortunate, but we are not worried about folks moving out to the community. It is a very safe community.”

Investigators are asking anyone with information to reach out to them.
