CHARLOTTE — Families, students and staff at Independence High School in east Charlotte are grieving after two students passed away this week.

The school issued a statement on Facebook, saying grief counselors were available for students and staff during this time.

Channel 9’s Evan Donovan saw a growing memorial at the school on Thursday.

Several students told Donovan the mood on campus has been sad.

“This week has been an incredibly difficult week for our Independence community,” the school began its Facebook post.

15-year-old Steven Gomez was accidentally shot on Sunday afternoon while playing a video game. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have not identified the other student, nor have they shared how that student died.

On top of those two students, Channel 9 learned Wednesday about the basketball player from Rocky River High School who collapsed during a game. That game was being played against Independence High and was at their gym.

It’s been a rough week all around, and the school asked families not to hesitate to reach out to a grief counselor if they need help.

“Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can be of service to your family during this time,” the school said.
