YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Thanks to a land donation by Crescent Communities, York County is planning a large lakeside athletic complex at the Paddlers Cove community.
Construction has broken ground for a $9.5 million, 32-acre sports and recreation site that will be open to the community as well as the residents of Paddlers Cove. It’s called the Lake Wylie Recreation Park, and it’s located at 1101 Field Day Lane in Clover.
York County and designers along with engineering firm Woolpert are using an innovative “design-build contract” to create the park, says Woolpert’s Charlotte office. The concept allows an open-book collaboration among the parties, allowing more flexibility in completing the project, says Andrew Pack, Woolpert vice president and education and athletics practice leader.
“Not many municipalities operate under these contracts to build parks, but it serves their needs well,” Pack says. The concept was used to build the Sportsplex in Matthews and a few other projects in the Charlotte region.
