Investigation underway after fatal south Charlotte crash, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department detectives are investigating a fatal crash that took place in south Charlotte Saturday evening.

Officers responded to an accident in the 800 block of John Belk Freeway shortly after 7 p.m. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive man, Wayne Raymond Cruse, 79, in the middle of the ramp to Kenilworth Avenue.

They also located a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse that was damaged and belonged to Richard Antonio Wofford, 50.

MEDIC pronounced Cruse dead on the scene.

Wofford wasn’t injured and refused MEDIC. He didn’t seem to be impaired.

Speed does not appear to be a factor in the accident.
