HICKORY, N.C. — A Hickory couple and their two dogs miraculously survived a plane crash deep in the North Carolina woods.

Dustin and Autumn Davis were flying from Hickory to Ocean Isle Beach when their Piper PA-32 plane starting having engine trouble and went down south of Whiteville. Dustin said the plane sputtered, then the engine quit and it was dark.

The couple tried to make it to the Columbus County Regional Airport in the single-engine aircraft but didn’t make it.

Remarkably, they walked away from the wreckage with their two dogs and were hospitalized with only minor injuries.

Channel 9’s Dave Faherty spoke with Dustin about the moment he knew they were going down and what he said to his wife.

“It was silence,” he said. “The very first question that she asks was, ”What can I do?“ Honestly, my response to her was just pray, just pray we can find something.”

Investigators are working to learn more about the cause of the crash.
