CHARLOTTE — An 18-year-old suspect led law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit from Charlotte into Spartanburg County, S.C., following an alleged carjacking.
The chase ended after Zyvarius Webber crashed his vehicle and was apprehended by authorities after attempting to flee on foot.
The incident began on Graham near Atanto Avenue in Charlotte after officers on routine patrol witnessed a violent act.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed that no officers fired their weapons and no officers were injured during the encounter.
Brenda Williams, a worker in the nearby area, witnessed the disturbance after hearing gunfire outside her workplace. “I was sitting at my desk working and heard three gunshots, and my manager heard it. And we ended up outside,” Williams said.
She described the scene as chaotic as the suspect attempted to flee in a truck. “It was just chaos; he came off the fence over there with the truck, and he went out into the traffic,” Williams said.
Williams said officers responded quickly to the scene with weapons drawn.
“They were holding their guns, so they were, when you say they who they. The police, yeah, they had their guns drawn,” Williams said. “I heard the gunshots, and that’s kind of scary. And I just thought they were gonna start shooting, but they had their guns drawn but didn’t start shooting.”
Authorities have not stated whether Webber was armed or fired a weapon during the incident. Police confirmed that he has prior auto theft charges in Charlotte and an open pending legal case.
Webber remains in custody in South Carolina while authorities arrange his initial court appearance.
Officials plan to extradite him back to North Carolina to face charges, though the timeline will depend on whether he contests extradition.
