CHARLOTTE — A major bridge replacement project connecting Gaston and Mecklenburg counties is moving forward, with construction now underway on the U.S. 74 bridge over the Catawba River.
[ TRAFFIC ALERT: More than $3M in road improvements coming to Cabarrus County ]
Work began last month as part of a larger project designed to improve traffic capacity and reliability along the corridor.
The project will add six lanes to the bridge and includes a reduced-conflict intersection at West Catawba Avenue and Wilkinson Boulevard.
Crews will also build new multi-use paths to improve connectivity to Gaston College, Kevin Loftin Park and a nearby nature preserve.
Most of the project is expected to be completed by April 2031.
