Man dies in morning crash in east Charlotte, police say

CHARLOTTE — A two-car crash in east Charlotte left one person dead on Wednesday morning, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Officers responded before 9 a.m. to the 14300 block of Albemarle Road for a crash between a 2015 Honda Accord and a 2005 Toyota Camry.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital, CMPD said. The driver of the Honda was taken by MEDIC with minor injuries, while the driver of the Toyota was airlifted with serious injuries.

Two hours later, David Wayne Denning, the driver of the Toyota, died from the injuries he sustained in the crash, according to officials.

An initial investigation revealed Denning was driving his Toyota north on Arlington Church Road and was making a left turn onto westbound Albemarle Road, CMPD said.

The driver of the Honda was traveling east on Albemarle Road in the left lane approaching Arlington Church Road when, police said, its front end struck the driver’s side door of the Toyota.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor, according to police, and both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

CMPD said the investigation into the case is ongoing.
