Man dies in single-vehicle crash that closed a major road in Ballantyne, police said

CHARLOTTE — One person died in a single-vehicle crash that shut down a major road in Ballantyne early Friday morning, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Just before 2:45 a.m., CMPD officers said they responded to a truck that ran off the road, hitting a tree and a building in the 9200 block of Ardrey Kell Road. The road was closed for several hours Friday morning.

Michael Wayne Dolan, 64, was the lone occupant of a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, officials said. Charlotte Fire and MEDIC pronounced Dolan dead at the scene.

Based on the initial investigation, police said Dolan was traveling too fast while driving east on Ardrey Kell Road. His truck ran off the right side of the road onto the shoulder, then Dolan overcorrected and the Chevrolet crossed the opposing lane and went off the roadway to the left.

Police said the truck struck a tree and continued off the roadway before hitting a commercial building. Dolan was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered fatal injuries, authorities said.

A Channel 9 crew arrived at Ardrey Kell Road near Blakeney Shopping Center around 4:20 a.m., between Community House Road and Rea Road. Our crew saw a sheet covering a body at the scene.

Investigators said excessive speed and impairment appeared to contribute to the crash, but toxicology results were pending.

The investigation is active and ongoing, authorities said.
