SHELBY, N.C. — A man who was sentenced to life in prison for the 2017 killing of a Shelby teenager has received a new plea deal that reduces his sentence.
Aaron Byers was convicted of shooting and killing his girlfriend, Hannah Binkley, while he was robbing two other teenagers.

According to The Shelby Star, Byers’ attorney argued that his plea was not properly explained to him when he entered it in 2017.
Under the new agreement, Byers was sentenced to 18 to 23 years in prison. He has already served about 13 years.
The new plea deal changes the sentence in a case that dates back nearly a decade, when Binkley was killed during the robbery.
