CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office will unveil a memorial this weekend to honor a deputy who gave his life in the line of duty.

Deputy Adam Klutz was shot and killed in 2008 when he responded to a 911 hang-up call at a home east of Lenoir.

The man accused in his death, Skip Brinkley, killed himself days later.

Earlier Friday morning, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies held a memorial service to honor officers killed in the line of duty.

The memorial in Klutz's honor will be permanently placed in front of the sheriff's office.

Officers held a procession from police headquarters to First Baptist Church in uptown.

The Mecklenburg County sheriff spoke to Channel 9 about how difficult the day is.

“The families of all the people here, I knew their loved ones, some of them I personally trained,” Sheriff Irwin Carmichael said.

Sadly, a national report released this month showed more police officers have been killed so far this year compared to the same time last year.
