CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The commissioner of Major League Soccer again opened the door for a possible expansion club in Charlotte on Tuesday when he described the possibility of having a team here as intriguing while acknowledging interest from new Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper.
Don Garber, the MLS commissioner, made his comments during an online social media Q-and-A session held as part of the league’s All-Star week events in Atlanta. Garber was responding to a question submitted by CBJ; his answer can be heard starting at the 4:15 mark.
“We’re intrigued by Charlotte,” the commissioner said Tuesday. “We’re well aware of David Tepper’s interest. Obviously, that’s a great development for the city, for their football team, for their fans. And the fact that he’s interested in MLS is a positive.”
On July 9, Tepper closed on his $2.275 billion purchase of the NFL Panthers from Jerry Richardson. A day later, during his introductory press conference at Bank of America Stadium, Tepper mentioned the possibility of bringing an MLS team to town while answering a question about whether he would seek public money for the NFL franchise’s stadium and practice center, among other projects.
