North Carolina sees lowest new COVID-19 cases in over a month

RALEIGH, N.C. — The number of new daily COVID-19 cases in North Carolina was the lowest its been since Dec. 28, according to the latest data reported by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Health officials reported 7,327 new positive cases Monday. That’s a decrease from 17,213 new cases Sunday.

Since the end of December, COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have continued to increase due to the omicron variant. But on Monday, health officials also reported hospitalizations under 5,000 for the second day in a row.

On Sunday, 4,882 people were hospitalized with COVID-19. That’s a decrease from 4,937 reported hospitalizations Saturday. That’s also down from the 5,201 hospitalizations reported Wednesday, which was the highest number of people hospitalized in the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

Health officials said 26.9% of people getting tested for COVID-19 test positive. 71% of North Carolina’s adult population is fully vaccinated.
