North Carolina-made J.R. Smith parody video takes internet by storm

CHARLOTTE, NC — The end of Game One of the NBA finals went viral thanks to a huge gaffe by Cleveland Cavalier player J. R. Smith.

Now, a spoof made in Charlotte is getting as much attention. Samuel Grubbs told Channel 9 when he saw the now-infamous play on Thursday night he knew he had to parody it.

With four seconds left in Game One - and the score tied - Smith rebounded a missed free throw. But instead of trying to take the lead with a shot or a pass, he dribbled the clock out. Teammate Lebron James' reaction quickly went viral.

That led to what Grubbs calls the "J.R. Smith Challenge." He filmed it in various locations around the Charlotte area. You can even catch a glimpse of the sign at Reedy Creek Park.

It's gotten more than 133,000 views in just two days.

"When I made the video, I wasn't expecting it to be this big. Like, I thought it was funny, and people in the mall actually picked up on it. They were like, we know what you're doing right now, you're roasting J.R. Smith for blowing the game," said Grubbs.

Grubbs said he doesn't want to give too much away, but he's already planning his next video. This time, it'll involve another Charlotte icon - Steph Curry - who plays for the Golden State Warriors.

Sunday night, Curry broke the record for most three's in an NBA finals game with nine.
