2 teens charged in shooting death of 18-year-old in Steele Creek

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have arrested two teens in connection with a homicide Sunday night in Steele Creek.

Jalen Boulware is charged with murder. Marvin Chavez-Quiffaro was initially charged as an accessory but a grand jury indicted him on a murder charge.

SWAT teams swarmed the southeast Charlotte neighborhood late Sunday night into Monday morning and officers went door-to-door with guns drawn as they hunted for the person who shot and killed 18-year-old Terale Claridy-Vaught.

Police said the incident started around 10:30 p.m. on Carolina Forest Court, just off Steele Creek Road and Erwin Road, when the suspect fired shots into a home.

Nobody was hurt but while police were investigating that shooting, they heard gunshots nearby.

Just down the street, officers found Claridy-Vaught lying in the road. He had been shot to death.

A neighbor heard the gunfire and ran outside to see if he could help Claridy-Vaught, but he told Channel 9 that it was obvious there was nothing he could do.

Officers locked down the entire neighborhood for hours while they searched for the shooter and Channel 9 watched as a SWAT vehicle was brought in and saw officers with long guns throughout the area.

Police also issued a reverse 911 call to neighbors, asking them to stay inside.

Around 4 a.m., CMPD officials said they thought the suspect may have left the area in a vehicle, and residents were no longer in any danger.

“First and foremost, the individual is not inside the neighborhood right now and we are still interviewing several folks right now,” said CMPD Major Nelson Bowling.

"I was pretty concerned because the gunshots were really close,” said neighbor Tim Ellis. “I didn't know where the perpetrators were. It’s concerning to me so I dialed 911 and within 30 seconds the cops were here."

Police roped off a large part of the street and Channel 9 could see numerous evidence markers in the roadway. Bullet holes could also be seen on some vehicles in the street and one car had its back window shattered.

The suspect may have used an assault rifle, possibly an AR-15. Neighbors told Channel 9 that the gunman wiped it down for prints and hid it in the bushes, but police found it.

Police have not said if there is a connection between the home that was shot at and the victim.

No motive has been given for the slaying.
