Officer-involved shooting under investigation in Catawba County

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A Newton police officer shot a man in the leg Monday afternoon after responding to a trespassing call at the Sandalwood Apartments.

The incident took place just before 12 p.m. after officers were informed that a suspect, reportedly armed with a gun, was hiding in a shed behind the apartments.

The caller told 911 they knew the suspect and reported he had a gun.

Officers said they were checking the area behind the apartments when the male exited one of the sheds and ran toward them.

During the encounter, one officer discharged a firearm and struck the suspect in the leg. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

No officers or other citizens were injured during the incident. The officer who fired the weapon has been placed on administrative leave.

The incident is under investigation by the Newton Police Department. A separate investigation is also being done by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
