CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police said they're investigating after someone shot into two vehicles Sunday along Interstate 85.

Investigators said the shooting happened around 7:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes before Glenwood Drive.

The driver of one of the vehicles, Kelly Johnson, and her passenger said they heard a large explosion while driving along the interstate.

They said that’s when the passenger noticed a bullet had hit his right leg.

“And the next thing I know, my passenger was, like, ‘I'm bleeding.’ And I said, ‘What?’” Johnson said.

Johnson, who had been deployed to Iraq in the past, said her combat instincts kicked in.

“And I was just trying to get away from the area,” Johnson said. “I mean, I just floored it and tried to get away as quickly as I could.”

Johnson pulled off the highway on the Little Rock Road exit and met police there.

An ambulance took the passenger to a hospital.

Johnson told police she couldn't see the shooter or the suspected car.

She believes they were caught in the crossfire of a high-speed shootout.

"Yeah, we were (really) lucky," Johnson said. "God was with us that night."

Officials said another vehicle was shot into as well.

Police still haven’t located the shooter.
