Forest Service officials announced the closure Wednesday, citing the need to keep visitors safe and minimize bear encounters.
Commissary Ridge serves as a popular dispersed camping location within the national forest. Officials emphasized that practicing bear safety is essential for all visitors, especially during periods of heightened wildlife activity, Forest Service officials said.
Forest Service officials advise visitors to store all food and scented items in bear-resistant containers or locked securely inside a vehicle.
On the trails, hikers are advised to make noise so they do not surprise a bear. Officials emphasized that visitors must never feed wildlife under any circumstances, officials said.
If an encounter occurs, forest officials instruct visitors to give the bear space, remain calm, slowly back away, and speak firmly.
