BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — Officials say one person was taken to the hospital after a reported encounter with a bear at a home near Asheville Tuesday night.
Crews with the Reems Creek Fire Department and Buncombe County EMS arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the call at 9 p.m.
Responding firefighters say they sounded an apparatus siren to scare away any wildlife in the area before safely entering the home. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission was notified and responded to assist at the scene.
According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, an adult female bear entered the home through an unlocked door while her three cubs were seen playing on the front porch.
Officials say the victim was hurt while attempting to give the bear a way out. They are expected to be ok.
Officials issued a reminder for residents in areas with active bear populations to secure potential food sources and keep exterior doors and windows locked. Wildlife officials also warned the public not to approach or interact with bears.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said the incident is still under investigation.
