CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Students who attended a school that shut down may get loan forgiveness.
The Department of Education just announced it will cancel $150 million in federal student loan debt. That would help 15,000 borrowers whose schools closed, which prevented them from finishing their programs.

While those colleges do not have any campuses in North Carolina, the governor's office said about $10,000 students in the state attended the company's schools in other states, or online, including about 800 in Charlotte.
Action 9 has been covering this issue with for-profit colleges for years. The colleges include:
- Charlotte School of Law
- Kaplan University
- DeVry University
- ITT Tech
- Everest College
- Brookstone College
- Brightwood College
The federal loan relief will not cover every student. About half of the money will go to students who attended colleges run by Corinthian Colleges, Inc.
You'll know if you're eligible for relief because the Department of Education will contact you.
It sent emails out starting Friday.
