Retired Gaston County police K-9 dies

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A retired K-9 that served the Gaston County community for six years has died.

Pax was a 14-year-old German shepherd that served with the Gaston County Police K-9 Unit from 2010 until 2016.

While he was with the department, Pax worked with three different handlers.

During his tenure, Pax assisted in more than 120 arrests. He conducted numerous tracks and apprehended several individuals, and was responsible for seizing more than $75,000 in illegal narcotics during his career, the police department said.

In addition to serving the citizens of Gaston County, Pax also assisted several partner state and federal agencies with investigations.

At the time of his death he was enjoying his retirement while living with former handler Capt. W. P. Downey.
