Accomplished Boone K-9 officer dies after battle with medical condition

BOONE, N.C. — A K-9 officer working in the Boone Police Department’s Narcotics Division has died after a battle with a medical condition, police say.

The department said the K-9 officer Kyra had been working with her partner Detective James Lyall since June 2017.

Officials said the pair helped several state and federal agencies such as the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, Homeland Security, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms as well as the USPS.

Kyra and Detective Lyall also assisted other sheriffs’ offices across the state with drug investigations. The department said "they have been instrumental in removing drugs from the streets of Boone, northwestern North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.”

Together, the K-9 officer and her partner seized over eight pounds of meth, 13 pounds of marijuana, three ounces of cocaine, 46 grams of heroin and helped to arrest more than 60 people for drug violations.
