SBI investigating after inmate dies at Mecklenburg County Jail

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigations are investigating the death of an inmate Sunday morning.

Deputies said 51-year-old Michael Mangan was found unresponsive in his cell at the detention center in uptown just after 5:30 a.m.

He was not placed in general housing yet because all non-symptomatic residents are placed in a different area for five days before they are reassigned, which is standard protocol.

Staff and first responders performed CPR on Mangan, but he died just before 6:30 a.m.

Authorities said Mangan was brought to the detention center on Friday and did not show any symptoms of COVID-19.

“We are devastated by the loss of Mr. Mangan,” Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden said. “Anyone who enters our facility is a part of our detention community and I am deeply saddened. Our condolences are with his family.”

Officials said the SBI will continue to investigate while the medical examiner determines the exact cause of death.
