YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The York County Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday it won’t charge a driver who shot and killed a man Thursday outside a Dollar General store in Sharon.

The 69-year-old shooting victim, Joseph Lewis, made threats and punched the driver, according to deputies.
“The first thing I thought was, ‘This is not something that happens in our small town,’” said neighbor Kim Legere. “That we’re a very tight-knit community.”
The 25-year-old driver then shot Lewis who later died at a hospital, investigators said.
“People were frightened because there was no knowledge of what was going on,” Legere said.
The driver was legally allowed to carry a gun and the shooting was self-defense, according to the solicitor’s office.
“I am a little surprised,” Legere said.
Neighbors said the incident started due to a dispute over Lewis’ dog.
However, the York County Sheriff’s Office has not confirmed that and haven’t said anything else about what led up to it.
No additional details have been made available.
