CHARLOTTE — An arrest was made after a person was injured in a stabbing on a city bus Thursday afternoon near North Tryon and Ashby streets in north Charlotte.
The stabbing happened around 4:45 PM, prompting a large police response that could be seen from Channel 9’s tower camera.
The Charlotte Area Transit System confirmed that a victim was stabbed on the bus, and police were searching for a suspect Thursday evening.
On Friday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said that 57-year-old James Bennett had been arrested for the stabbing.
Bennett was booked into custody for attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
Video from the scene showed some children getting off the bus, and police were seen working inside the bus, particularly near the driver’s seat.
“I thought about it after the stabbing on the train, I was a little skeptical about riding the bus, but I carry pepper spray with me so that’s my security when I’m out in public,” said Tori Govan, another passenger.

While the police have not released much information about the incident, the fact that homicide detectives weren’t called suggests that the victim may survive.
“No, I haven’t seen no incidents on the bus at all since I’ve been riding,” said Tadford Davis, a bus passenger who was surprised by the news.
Davis mentioned that he tries to be invisible when riding the bus, saying, “I stay to myself, get on, get off where I’m going, and that’s it. Mind my business.”
As police continue to investigate, the condition of the victim remains unknown, and no arrests have been reported.
