The economic fallout from the pandemic has dealt a blow to many local small businesses as well as larger, well-known chains.
Retailers have been forced to adapt in recent months, after many closed early on in the pandemic to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to comply with stay-at-home restrictions that kept nonessential businesses shuttered.
For some retailers already challenged by evolving industry trends, such as the shift away from bricks-and-mortar business in favor of e-commerce, the pandemic has proved too much to overcome. A string of national retailers have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since this spring, including several department store chains.
The Charlotte Business Journal has combed through its archives over the past six months to see which local retailers have closed up shop. CBJ has also looked back at some of the biggest announcements on store closures and bankruptcies made by national retail chains since the pandemic began to see if Charlotte-area stores would be impacted.
