HICKORY, N.C. — An innocent driver became the victim of a chase Thursday morning in Hickory.
The chase began at Catawba Valley Medical Center, after suspect BJ Mull showed a gun during a domestic incident at the hospital, police said.
The hospital said it took safety measures after a woman ran into the emergency room even though their officers never saw a weapon.
The chase started when the man took off in the SUV.
Officers pursued the man for five to six miles before he crashed into the innocent driver's car on 1st Street, SE.
The victim was taken to the hospital, but their condition has not been released.
Police later found his damaged SUV in the Kenworth neighborhood where Mull tried to hide first in the Hickory Village Memory Care facility.
Police said workers there locked him out. They used dogs to search the area but haven't located Mull yet.
Evan Starnes, who witnessed a portion of the chase, was worried someone would get hurt.
"It was a dangerous situation because of the volume of traffic and the neighborhoods across the street," Starnes said.
Kiki Wilfong was home when she heard the impact and saw the driver take off with police in hot pursuit.
"[It was a] big commotion like boom. Sounded like someone coming through the house. Just seen the back end of the car and police going behind them," Wilfong said.
