United Airlines proposes discount ticket with heavy restrictions

United Airlines planes sit on the tarmac at San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco, California.

United Airlines will roll out a new basic economy ticket early next year for the budget conscious.

Basic economy restricts travelers from bringing a carry-on bag, although they can still bring a personal item like a purse or briefcase.

The airline will automatically choose a seat for the traveler and cannot guarantee that groups will be seated together.

Other airlines, like American and Delta, will offer a similar basic economy ticket that also restricts seat assignments, but none restrict carry-on luggage.
