CHARLOTTE — A water main break in East Charlotte caused significant traffic delays and flooding Tuesday on Sharon Amity Road, prompting residents like Floyd Springs to walk to the grocery store.
The water main break at about 6 p.m. led to a river of water flowing down the road and into the parking lot of Compare Foods, affecting traffic and pedestrian movement.

Water service was restored earlier and crews will complete repaving the road, Charlotte Water posted Wednesday on X. Lanes are expected to reopen by late Thursday.
“I had to cross over, hoping that I don’t get too much wet trying to get to the grocery store,” said Floyd Springs, who decided to walk due to the backed-up traffic.
Jermaine Ingram commented on the situation, saying, “Ridiculous. I mean, people are trying to get home about four or five o’clock, traffic.”
Charlotte Water officials have previously explained that high temperatures can cause soil to contract, leaving space for pipes to sag and crack, which may have contributed to the break.
Crews were observed working to repair the damaged pipe, aiming to restore normal conditions as soon as possible.
Springs expressed relief that his water service was not impacted by the break, saying, “I thank God for that, you know. But someone else may not have it in this area.”
Channel 9 has reached out to Charlotte Water to determine the cause of the water flow. However, additional details have not been made available.
