CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hundreds of local families can register Friday for assistance in helping them buy a home through the Wells Fargo “NeighborhoodLIFT Program.”

Organizers said 400 homebuyers have already registered for the two-day event, but that walk-ins are still welcomed.

Residents in Mecklenburg, Union, Gaston, Rowan, and Cabarrus counties may apply for a down payment assistance grant of $15,000.

To be eligible, applicants must make less than 80 percent of the median income in that county (the median income in Mecklenburg County is $59,300).

Channel 9 reporter Gina Esposito was there last month when Wells Fargo announced the return of the program.

Kimberly Sauer said she was one of 312 Charlotte residents who received down payment assistance through NeighborhoodLIFT when it came to the city in 2013. At the time, she was making $50,000 a year working for the city.

She said the down payment assistance gave her the boost she needed to buy her home in south Charlotte.

NeighborhoodLIFT also offers special down payment assistance for teachers and first responders who qualify.

The event is being held Friday and Saturday at the Charlotte Convention Center. For more details, click here.
