PHOENIX, Ariz. — A national championship win was the best way for West Charlotte alumnus Kennedy Meeks to end his four-year career at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Meeks sealed the win with a late game block Monday night and now leaves Chapel Hill as a national champion.

Channel 9 sports anchor Phil Orban caught up courtside with Meeks’ family right after he helped his teammates cut down the nets.
“What’s this moment like for you?” Phil asked Meeks’ mother, Nokhia Meeks.
“It’s so amazing, I have no other words other than I’m so truly, truly, really and truly happy,” Nokhia Meeks said.

Meeks was named to the all-tournament team after a six-game run. But it wasn’t always easy. UNC head coach Roy Williams said he was as tough on Meeks as he was on anyone. Nokhia Meeks said she’s grateful for Williams.
“It just added on to his character, build more integrity. I need (Williams) to be tough on him,” Nokhia Meeks said.

While in the locker room, Meeks said he felt the support from his family, which served as his own personal cheering section. He said it was special to share the moment with those who are most important to him.
“This is definitely for them. They’re the reason I’m playing basketball. They’re the reason I love playing basketball,” Meeks said. “Just to see the smile on their faces, there’s nobody else in the world that makes me happier than them.”
Meeks left UNC with 116 career wins and as part of one of the winningest classes in Tar Heel history.
