CMPD: Woman killed by suspected drunk driver in Fourth of July hit-and-run

CHARLOTTE — A suspected drunk driver has been arrested and faces charges after police said a woman was hit and killed by a car on the Fourth of July in west Charlotte.

Shortly before 11:40 p.m., officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian along West Boulevard, near West Tyvola Road. When they got there, police found 33-year-old Rinnell Curry who had been hit by a car.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives said Curry had been standing away from her vehicle and in the roadway when a black 2013 Chrysler 300 struck her and then drove off.

Police were able to find the car at the suspect’s home a short time later and arrested 46-year-old Jody Yeldell.

According to investigators, speed and alcohol consumption by Yeldell contributed to the crash. He has been charged with driving while license revoked, DWI, felony death by motor vehicle and felony hit and run.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
