Woman arrested, accused of hit-and-run that killed 13-year-old boy

CHARLOTTE — Police have arrested a woman accused of hitting and killing a teenage boy with her SUV in a hit-and-run early Sunday in northeast Charlotte.

Police responded shortly after 2:10 a.m. to reports of a collision just north of The Plaza on East W. T. Harris Boulevard.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, 13-year-old Kevin Gaviel Osorto was walking along the right shoulder of the southbound side of East W.T. Harris Boulevard when he was hit by a vehicle. Osorto was pronounced dead at the scene.

CMPD said debris from the collision helped detectives in identifying the suspect vehicle as a 2016 or 2017 Chevrolet Equinox.

Police found Tamika Powell’s Chevy Equinox on Monday morning, parked in a gravel driveway on The Plaza, not far from the crash scene. Officers spotted damage to the vehicle that matched the profile released by detectives.

CMPD arrested Powell, 35, and charged her with felony hit-and-run and involuntary manslaughter.

No other information has been released.
