CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to selling perfume infused with dead hummingbirds at the Botanica La Reyna store in north Charlotte.

Last summer, Channel 9's Liz Foster confronted the owner, Delia Perez-Beltran, and uncovered an international issue. Beltran denied the accusation then.

Concerned viewers contacted Channel 9 about an advertisement with pictures on Facebook. The chuparosa perfume, believed by some in the Latin American culture to bring love, was advertised for $45.

Within days of Channel 9’s report, wildlife officers raided the store and found the perfume from the advertisement.

“This case is pretty unique,” said Officer Sampson Parker, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. “I’m not aware of any charge, any hummingbird charge that’s been made in Mecklenburg County or maybe the state of North Carolina. Not that I’m aware of.”

The court dismissed the second charge of illegal possession of wildlife.

The judge did not impose any penalty or fine…Perez-Beltran had to pay court fees, which were $180.
