CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have arrested a man and charged him in a deadly overnight hit-and-run crash in east Charlotte.
Officers were called to Central Avenue near Sharon Amity Road around 2:30 a.m. where they found a man that had been struck by a vehicle lying in the road.
That victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Shortly after the crash, officers said Luis Perez-Rivera called 911 to report that someone had moved his van from its parking space at Greenbryre Apartments off Teal Point Drive.
Police said they found Perez-Rivera’s van, a Honda Odyssey with heavy front-end damage, at the apartment complex. When they got in touch with Perez-Rivera he agreed to come to CMPD headquarters to speak with detectives.
After being questioned, police charged Perez-Rivera with DWI, felony death by vehicle and felony hit-and-run.
Investigators said speed and alcohol impairment appear to be contributing factors in the crash.
Central Avenue was closed in both directions between Rosehaven and Sharon Amity before police reopened it at 6 a.m.
Police have not released the name of the victim.
