CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Prosecutors asked a judge to set a $2 million bond for Eric Cox, an ex-Marine charged with DWI and murder in a fatal crash on Monday.
Attorneys said Cox had been drinking at a bar since 5 p.m. Sunday, about 10 hours before the crash at the intersection of East Sugar Creek Road and The Plaza.
Cox's father told the judge that his son was "an honorable person caught in a bad situation." He also tried assuring the court that Cox was not a flight risk.
While weighing his bond, the judge said he'd also have to factor whether Cox was a danger to the community, in light of a separate DWI conviction last year.
Ultimately, the judge set bond at $350,000 and said that if Cox was able to post it he would be on 24-hour house arrest, wouldn't be allowed to drink any alcohol and would be required to wear an alcohol monitoring device.
It wasn't immediately clear if Cox would be able to post bond. His family and friends declined comment.
Meanwhile, L'Huon Sui, the woman killed in the crash, is being remembered by friends at Metrolina Greenhouses, where she worked.
"She was trying to do what was good for her family," said Phil Heilman, with Metrolina Greenhouses. "That's the reason she was out so late -- she was working."
Sui's 4-year-old son was in the back seat of her car. He's still hospitalized and is in critical condition.
